Gardening Information
Pointers for Pruners A sample of some of the Great Gardening and plant info at LJC FEED Pruning woody landscape plants is daunting to many property owners, who may wonder if all plants should be pruned alike. Cane forming shrubs, including Forsythia and lilac, should be allowed to reach their natural height. Then, every year, use thinning cuts and take out one-eighth to one-fifth of the canes, preferably the oldest. Upright or tree-like shrubs, like rhododendrons, usually need little pruning and will look best when thinned slightly every few years. Save heading cuts for hedges, where tight compact growth is desirable. Flowering shrubs and trees require a little more thought before pruning if you want them to bloom nicely each year. Most importantly, consider when these plants bloom; if they bloom in late winter or spring you want to prune after bloom. If they bloom in summer or fall you want to prune during dormancy in winter. Never cut the top out of a tree. Topping destroys a tree's natural beauty and weakens it structurally. When planting trees, plan ahead and put them in a location that matches their natural height. That way, they won't need topping when they reach your eave or power line. If you have to reduce the height of a tree, use a thinning cut to remove the tallest limbs in their entirety. If an old tree is causing you some concern, you can take weight off without topping in this manner. Source: Stephen Renquist Trees and Shrubs Plant bare root trees and shrubs. Prune back summer flowering clematis This is a good time to move plants which have out grown their present site and location. In mild areas clump forming perennials can be divided and replanted with fresh organic matter. Lawns If drainage is poor aerate the lawn by pricking the ground with a fork to a depth of 15cm. Then brush sharp sand into the holes. If the weather permits give the lawn a light mow towards the end of the month. Apply prilled lime @50# per 3000sf. Ponds Now is the time to tidy ponds of fallen leaves, over crowded oxygenated plants and look to invest in new aquatic plants. Finding out what is suitable. Mulching should be done how before plants get to big. A thick layer of organic matter should be applied up to 5cm to 7cm. Bulbs and newly emerging perennials will grow through it. Be aware of dwarf growing bulbs which may be in flower. Your pots and trays should be cleaned /washed using hot soapy water. This is important as dirty pots harbor pests and diseases. Covering soil with clear polythene will help to keep of heavy rain enabling you to keep the soil dry and workable. This will be particularly prelevant on heavy or clay soils. The polythene will also warm the soil up by as much as 2oC enabling you to plant and sow a lot earlier. |
